In many ways, the Geely Coolray truly impresses. It’s got sporty styling, extra features aplenty, and most important, a reasonable price tag. But there’s also one thing the vehicle has recently proven that’s arguably more valuable than anything else we’ve mentioned: It’s a safe car.
The New Car Assessment Program for Southeast Asian Countries (ASEAN NCAP) just tested the Proton X50—a rebadged Coolray that’s sold in other markets like Malaysia—and the vehicle just scored five stars out of five.
Breaking the five-star rating down further, the X50 scored 31.42 for adult occupant protection, 41.5 for child occupant protection, and 14 for safety assist. This is good for a total score of 84.26 out of 100. To put things into perspective, that’s pretty close to the Toyota Fortuner’s 87.46 points and the Corolla Cross’ 88.61 points that the ASEAN NCAP revealed just recently.

These are pretty decent numbers from the vehicle that’s still relatively new in the market, and it helps break the stigma that has surrounded Chinese cars here on our side of the globe for several years already. Granted, the X50 tested by the ASEAN NCAP isn’t exactly the same vehicle as the one Geely Philippines sells here (the X50 being right-hand-drive and all) but it does give us an idea of just how sturdy of a crossover the Coolray can be.
